In all of this one point we miss about Carney is that he has been playing this game much much much longer than most of us can know. Carney knows the fallibility of greed probably better than anyone in the world. He’s made a deep study of it since the financial crisis of 2008 at least.

The understanding of the narcissistic underpinnings of the financial world make his use of the tactics you describe seem like second nature

Trump overplayed his hand when he threatened Greenland. Carney knew it and seized the moment without a moments hesitation.

I truly can’t believe the people who waste their time trying to downplay either the speech or his leadership.

Annie Girard's avatar

I like how you underline the link between greed and narcissism which goes up to unlimited greed and malignant narcissism.

Thank you! When you control the narrative ie legacy media…to own the game! The number of “deals” Carney has made that directly benefit Brookfield have been well published in non mainstream media…billions to Ukraine…prior Trudeau & Freeland…money laundered billions to Ukraine, & look where she is now!! Going after Trump (not that he doesn’t deserve criticism) is a pass time of our media which deflects the destruction of the Canadian economy via systemic corruption, 15 million immigrants (most while we where locked in our homes), Trudeau, Freeland & the big fish CARNEY work for WEF …period ….Carney is polished, shrewd & plain EVIL… it’s incredible and depressing to see how many boomers, especially older boomers that still receive their information via legacy media or mainstream media and are completely brainwashed as a result! Carney is raping Canada blind…as did Trudeau & Freeland …again I repeat “systemic corruption”…

Jacqueline's avatar

And there is is your problem - and the problem facing the current US administration - where power is perceived only as military and economic might. The soft power being harnessed by Mark Carney is more powerful - and up until this current administration this has always been the strongest weapon in the US's armoury. Your allies more often did things in America's interest rather than their own. Canada followed America's trade tariffs with China to support America; your former allies followed America into wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, not becuase it was in their interest, but because America asked them to. This power ensured and underpinned the dollar and the American economy as it guaranteed America being seen a safe place to invest.

This power isn't macho and can't be used to intimidate or bully and as such Trump and you attach no value to it and so you've thrown it away.

What is brilliant about Mark Carney, is that he fully recognises this potential and as former head of both the Bank of England and the Canadian Central Bank he fully understands how the markets work and to use this soft power - so he has picked it up - and as a none Candian you can't deny how masterly he has performed, by contrast to Trump who performed "like a bull in a China shop".

If you can't recognise this then that reflects on you - I can assure you the rest of the World has seen and it is watching the power of the US ebb away!!

Trump is destroying the WTO, the IMF, WHO, UN, NATO - in all Trump has pulled the US out of 66 International Organisations and Treaties - all organisations the US has played a leading role. He is now trying to replace them with new organisations - The Peace Board, the G5 - if you now want to see where American infulence lies - look at the proposed members of these new bodies.

The G7 - America, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy and the UK.

The proposed G5 - America, Russia, India, China and Japan (China and Japan hate each other as do China and India).

Google members to the PeaceBoard - you decide if America is stronger under Trump. Then Google the UN.

The only people that do not see that they are part of a cult are those that are in it !!

The cult of Carney has legacy media behind him (paid for with Canadian tax dollars I made add) and making Trump the big bad beast serves Carney . Not the Canadians!

our country has been systematically dismantled under Trudeau and Freeland and they’re deeply systemic corruption of money laundering to Ukraine funds flowing to their friends and family, and now Kearney and the former worked for WEF aka elites as does Carney …people are beyond blind because they’re getting their news a.k.a. their propaganda from mainstream media!

Wakeup… well people were locked in their houses for reasons that we are completely illogical and have been proven false… we were inundated with immigrants, i.e Kalastani’s.. massive inflation was created by disallowing people to work and forcing them to stay at home and receive their $2000 a month, children missed two years of schooling, first second third year generation businesses gone forever, the restaurant industry, crushed and inflation through the roof… we are being run by a criminal organization, and people are unbelievably blind, naïve, and simply ignorant to the fact that we no longer live in a democracy!

He talked of increased military spending which he has intimated before that he will combine the Coast Guard and DOD budgets as well as make the military net zero. This is not military spending it is smoke and mirrors and idealism.

The praise of Carney is fair, deserved. He’s got integrity and expertise. But let’s keep in mind that Carney owes his election to Trump’s attacks on Canada. Carney politically will well served to keep making a show out of standing up to the bully whilst being careful not to inflame the situation more than is necessary. The article could have mixed in a little bit of the reality contributing to Carney’s current success in the course of heaping praise on Carney.

DM79's avatar

Re: Carney owes his election to Trump’s attacks on Canada

Carney only put himself in this position because he saw the need to defend Canada and the free world from the fascists to the south. He is a true patriot in the vein of the many Canadians who sacrificed their lives in WW1/2

Jane Smythe🇨🇦's avatar

I think the point of the story was not why he is here but now that he is, and given the reality this is how he is dealing with reality.

David Heath's avatar

Carney owes his election success to himself. It’s now crystal clear Poilievre was never up to the job of PM of Canada

CascadianJoe's avatar

Great analysis. Carney is creating a pathway for Canada as a stable middle power. With resources, people, and frankly low cost due to a low dollar value. This makes Canada a natural choice as a trade partner. Our problem to solve as Canadians is not to simple be a resource extractor, but to add value to our lumber, minerals and other resources while exporting them.

I would be happy to get back to extracting resources. That is a value added exercise! Do we really want to refine rare earths when we can export the mess to Americans desperate to use them to make better weapons? Do we want more refineries -- maybe in your neighbourhood Cascadian Joe when we should be exporting millions of barrel and billions of cubic feet of crude and natgas? When will we start extracting and exporting these natural resources so we can afford the governments we have? Building smelters and refineries add billions of costs, years of bureaucracy and lifetime of ecological pain. Getting moving is our problem to solve!

As an American, listening to Carney is a relief. No bluster or bragging. Clear and to the point.

Carney is not a politician by trade, but he knows how to play the game. Central bankers must most of all exude confidence to maintain stability. Carney is a master at this. He also presents a factual basis for his policies. His digs at Trump are subtle enough to not be offensive, but everyone understands his message. If only we had someone as thoughtful and measured running our country.

carol nasvytis's avatar

I was stuck by some similarities between Carney’s speech and Jerome Powell’s takedown of trump after he threatened to fire him. Both laid out the facts and made their case in a clear and calm, cool collected manner. They communicated effectively with no drama. Must be a prerequisite to be a central banker.

Ronald Garrell's avatar

Carney is doing a great job. He also owes his election to Trump’s sociopathy and attacks on Canada. “His digs at Trump are subtle enough to not be offensive”. Yes and smart. He also is probably calculating that playing this role of standing up to this bully without blowing things up is very good for his party and very good for his own career. The article lavishes Superman praise on Carney without mixing in the political reality and the limits that Canada is facing.

Hi I’d like correct something

CUSMA is NOT up for renegotiation, it’s an update

If 🇺🇸 pulls out we continue with the current until June 30th, 2036

If 🇺🇸 wants to completely withdraw they have to give everyone 6 month transition

🇺🇸 companies will never let him!

DenRaym's avatar

Not to mention Congress approval is required to pull out of CUSMA. Considering that 30 states depend on Canada as their biggest export customer, not sure 100% pull out will get their approval

Methane Malone's avatar

Not to mention Article 32.10 of the USMCA ( that's what Reuters and our own Intelligence Agency CSIS correctly refer too it ) states the following:

Article 32.10 of the USMCA restricts Mexico and Canada from entering into trade agreements with non-market economies, particularly targeting China. This provision allows the United States to potentially terminate the agreement if either country signs such a deal, effectively giving the U.S. a form of veto power over their trade relations with non-market countries.

Comrade Carney and the rest of the Clown Factory obviously didn't even read or use an AI search to see what could occur if they end up doing a deal with the CCP. They jetted on over to Beijing and promptly dug themselves a hole. Hence the big shutdown of the big Presser in Quebec City cause some lawyer decided to look at the paperwork and rightfully said " we're gonna get burned badly if this China EV deal goes thru. " The only benefit was of course to Brookfield and the Chinese company who provides parts and batteries to those EV's. Carney owns stock options in that company that at the end of 2024 were valued at nearly 20 Million Dollars. Guess what they would be worth when the EV's start flying off the production line. Not to mention the zero benefit to our fast sinking automotive sector.

Craig Smith's avatar

You conveniently forgot one word - Article 32.10 of the USMCA prohibits entering into a “FREE trade agreement” which is significantly different from saying we cannot enter into trade agreements.

Details matter.

Judy's avatar

Thank you, Craig. Carney would never have made that error with China. He is a man who does his research thoroughly... 🇨🇦

Get your facts right…was not a trade deal, was only removal of tariffs that brought every thing back to what is was before. And Brookfield nor their subsidiaries make EV batteries except 12 volts for any car

Methane Malone's avatar

“We are excited to grow our business with the acquisition of Power Solutions, a global market leader which generates consistent cash flows and profitability,” said Cyrus Madon, CEO, Brookfield Business Partners. “We look forward to partnering with the management team to continue growing this world-class business and build on its track record of innovation.”

“We are very pleased to partner with Brookfield, that shares our vision of value creation through long-term commitment,” commented Stéphane Etroy, Executive Vice-President and Head of Private Equity at CDPQ. “This transaction enables us to acquire not only the world leader in automotive batteries, but also a model in terms of environmental and health & safety measures, that runs one of the most efficient industrial recycling systems globally.”

DenRaym's avatar

Brookfield is not the Canadian government so not sure I get your point besides the fact that Carney’s blind trust may still have some Brookfield shares. If you’re so convinced that Brookfield is making pile of money because Carney is now Prime Minister….buy some shares

P.s. Brookfield has interests in companies that produce and sell as we speak only 12 volts batteries for all cars. They do not produce EV batteries

Valerie Martin's avatar

Anybody who has a pension plan will likely have shares in Brookfield. Conspiracy theorists go on as if Mark Carney was running the company, while serving as PM; they continue to refute the existence or purpose of the blind trust he immediately set up when he was chosen as the Liberal leader, to meet conflict of interest rules. You can be sure if the shoe was on the Conservatives’ foot, they would be perfectly satisfied with such action. If they don’t like the rules, they can always bring forward a Bill in Parliament to tighten the rules. It’s more effective politically to keep up the noise in social media, attacking the PM’s credibility.

Methane Malone's avatar

It's called a Conflict of Interest , of which Carney had over 100 as of 2025.

Also what is interesting in the Preliminary Agreement between the CCP and Canada is this area concerning Steel & Aluminum .....

Steel and Aluminum

Canada will extend to the end of 2026 previous remission measures for certain Chinese steel and aluminium products that are in short supply in Canada, covering 66 lines of product-specific remissions (11 full remissions and 55 partial remissions), and 49 tariff lines of company-specific remissions. Canada will also expand remissions coverage to 7 steel, 2 aluminum, and 4 steel derivative products. This expansion will enter into force by March 1, 2026, and be retroactive to January 1, 2026.

This measure covers steel, aluminum, and derivative products that are in low or have no supply in Canada, meaning they are not made by Canadian producers in sufficient volumes to serve the Canadian economy.

Remission means Remove. So according to the paras above our steel and aluminum industry will get second fiddle to the CCP. It would be interesting to hear what Rio Tinto has to say about their foundries and smelting plants business being directly affected by CCP supply.

Methane Malone's avatar

So our steel and aluminum industry , which sorely needs new markets , will see the CCP get tariff free access to supply Canada. Doesn't look good for any much needed expansion of jobs and opportunities in our steel and aluminum industry.

L M's avatar

you are confusing a free trade deal which we DID NOT sign with China so stop spreading BS

Mags's avatar

Very good job pointing out what a fool can come up with.

Carney and Xi both had to explain to trump it wasn't a free trade agreement at all. In fact, all he did was reset the relationship , so the trade that was happening before could restart, and that includes the EVs. But good job pointing out that you misread what was happening!

Robert Ritchie's avatar

Yep, it’s all straight out of Trump’s playbook, Carney has learned well.

USIBARIS's avatar

you overstate the China deal

Judy's avatar

Thanks for for correcting that...it's only time for CUSMA review. Yeah, 2036 is renegotiation. 🇨🇦

Brian Driscoll's avatar

Wrong. Withdrawing from CUSMA takes effect six months following notification.

"A Party may withdraw from this Agreement by providing written notice of withdrawal to the other Parties. A withdrawal shall take effect six months after a Party provides written notice..."

It does probably require congressional approval, and given the disruptions it would entail, that may be difficult.

DM79's avatar

This article is hardly superficial

Tireseus's avatar

Thank you so much for this well reasoned piece. I am a Canadian but I live in Brasil, a country whose president has no compunction whatsoever about showing Trump the middle finger. Brasil has embraced the same strategy that Carney is expounding - develop alternate markets and relationships even if it means holding your nose on occasion while signing the agreement. Brasil’s growth has been nothing short of miraculous because, like Canada, Brasil produces what the world wants - metal and energy commodities, agricultural commodities, things that can easily shift to more willing purchasers. Inputs that the U.S. needs in order to produce it’s most exported products - financial services and inflation. Markets are indeed telling the tale. Gold, silver, copper markets - representing real world production inputs - have been soaring while more abstract markets (especially crypto) have been hammered. Carney is simply seeking leverage in negotiations and is marshalling the resources (literally).

Gerry's avatar

Really good piece, very easy to understand how subtle market shifts and trade deals put the jack back in the box...the resistance here knows it's going to get worse before it gets better, decades of dissent ignored and no leverage against our own military and flaccid Congress unwilling to use its own powers, states that could counter the fed by taking functions back and refusing to enforce federal law but so many states captured by the same morons or thinking if they keep selling our land to foreign countries somehow they aren't going to be on the short end of the stick. I've seen foreign arbitrage and it doesn't end well for the locals. Love Carney, love the discipline he brings and hope when we can turn the page here his influence will bring peace and stability back to this continent if merely through example of leadership. Btw people in the northern states have been hoping Canada would take us if we seceeded for years. It's been a decade of existential crises and getting dragged through the mud every day, we are tired but just have to outlast these f*ckers and hope there's something left of our land for us when it's over.

Thank you for that excellent analysis. It is reassuring that Carney knows what he is doing. Your clarity will help all of us increase our understanding. It would be nice if PP understood it, and better yet if his sycophant, Danielle Smith, understood it as well.

Paul's avatar

First off, he is keeping people churned up about Trump. Are you for real? Are you so deeply brainwashed by the CULT that you don’t see what is happening down there, and to us. Are you so anesthetized that you can’t comprehend that murdering people in the streets is wrong. Are you so deluded that you believe Trump will take care of us in his malevolence?

Now, what has Carney done? He is building alliances with the world. We are part of the European defence procurement program. We have offset some Chinese tariffs. We are set to open trade relations with India. We have aligned ourselves with nations who have a way of standing up to Trump using financial assets. Our PM received a standing ovation at Davos. Another thing is to look at what he hasn’t done. He hasn’t arrested adversaries to his regime. He hasn’t arrested journalists. He hasn’t arrested children. He hasn’t allowed law enforcement to shoot a mother in the head at point blank range and he hasn’t been responsible for shooting a man in the back 10 times.

My advice to you, get psychiatric help or in true cult fashion get beamed up to the mothership - the US of A.
